PARENT BLOG - 8 weeks

       1.  Development of fetus
  • Cartilage and bones begin to form - At the end of this week your baby will have already completed 1/5th of the journey 'til his birthday!
  • The basic structure of the eye is well underway - The position is more "newborn" like already!
  • The tongue begins to develop
  • Intestines move out of the umbilical cord into the abdomen.
  • Body grows and makes room - Two months along and this little one is growing inside and out by leaps and bounds!
  • The fingers and toes have appeared but are webbed and short
  • Baby's length (crown to rump) is 0.61 inch (1.6cm) and weight is 0.04 ounce (1gm)
       2.   Changes in mom's body:
  • During pregnancy at 8 weeks it is very likely that you have started to notice some breast changes. Aside from some tenderness you may notice that your breasts appear slightly enlarged. Most women will experience some breast growth during pregnancy week by week, particularly near the end of pregnancy when the breasts prepare to make breast milk for the baby.
  • Some women notice some mild abdominal cramping midway through their first trimester. Remember that your body is also accommodating a growing baby, and your uterus is stretching, a process that might cause some discomfort over time.
  • You may be having a lower backache by now. This is common and is a result of the pressure the uterus is applying to the low part of the spine. You may be experiencing a sharp pain in your buttocks and along the side of your thigh as well.
       3.  Odds of having a child, twins or triplets
  •  Among general populations, the chances of having twins in the 21st century are about 3 in 100, or about 3%. Your chances are better than ever; researchers have recorded an increase of nearly 60% since the early 1980s. The most recent statistics, part of a 2006 study by the National Center for Health Statistics show that twins represented 32.21 of every 1,000 births.
  • One thing to keep in mind is that the statistics - the odds or chances of having twins or multiples - are based on populations, not individuals.
       4.  Choosing methods of giving birth
  • For women who would like to have a natural birth experience but prefer to give birth in a medical facility, a midwife at a hospital can be the perfect compromise between a natural and medically assisted birth.
  • Over the course of your pregnancy, your midwife will get to know you and will work with you to help you have the kind of birth experience you desire.
  • While most births do, in fact, go off without a hitch, occasionally there can be issues that arise and threaten the health of the mother or the child. Some women prefer the peace of mind that comes from giving birth in a hospital, just in case there are unforeseen complications during the birth.
  • Midwifery care in a hospital setting is becoming a mainstream birth choice, providing a natural, gentle birth experience combined with the security of knowing medical care is right there if needed.
       5.  What NOT to do during pregnancy
  • Smoking
  • Drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Undergo extreme stress
  • Clubbing
       6.  What should be done during pregnancy
  • Get regular medical exam
  • Eat well and get plenty of exercise
  • Focus on your child and avoid negative thoughts and actions
  • Take prenatal vitamin
  • Attend birth giving classes
